Do y'all remember the days when sports ran your life? Why is it that now, when "our teams" lose, we can just brush it off and go on with our day, while when in grade school and high school, a Mets loss was like a spit in the face? Diehard fans know what I'm talking about ... when your favorite team loses, it plagues your mind like unbearable guilt. You can't sleep, you're cranky, you refuse to watch Sportscenter or read the Sports pages in the morning ... it sucks. I am not exaggerating. You can only take solace in looking forward to their next game, a chance for your team to avenge the loss, a chance for you to purge your sorrows. It got to the point where watching sports on television was not fun. It was sort of like an obligation to your team as a diehard fan to support them in spirit. Shit got nerveracking, too ... because as the Mets or Knicks slipped towards a loss, I could feel the misery coming on, like symptoms ... and then when the final buzzer sounded or the final out was made and your team was on the short end, it kicked in like the flu. Turn off the television, brush your teeth and lay in your bed in agony. You will not sleep well tonight.
But now, I just move on ... why is that? I still love my teams, still watch almost every game ... what have the past 5 years done to my fervor for fanaticism? Granted, the Mets and Knicks are both sub-par teams over the past couple years ... is that why? I like can't get into it as much anymore. What's my deal? Am i getting old? It can't be that ... there are 50 year old men who, over an entire lifetime, have retained their passion for the teams they love, through good times and bad. So someone tell me. What the shit is going on?
